An Easy Recipe to Strengthen Your Family’s Immune System
As a busy mom, I am always looking for ways to help my family stay healthy during the colder months. About a year ago, my mother-in-law shared her homemade natural syrup recipe that she used to prevent her 3 boys from getting colds and viruses, and it has now become a staple in our home! This easy natural syrup contains lemon, red onion, and sugar – three simple ingredients you can easily find at your local grocery store or in your pantry. Keep reading because I will share how to make this amazing natural syrup so that you can help build your children’s immune systems too!
Now let me add that I was skeptical about this at first. But luckily, my mother-in-law is persistent, made me a jar, and said just try it. The boys happened to be sick at the time, so I was ready to try anything to help them feel better. To my surprise, my kid’s painful coughs quickly disappeared. It was like magic. Since then, I use the syrup to help prevent my kids from getting colds. And yes, we do get the occasional cold here and there but it’s significantly less than typical with two in daycare and one in kindergarten. We take 1 tablespoon (5ml) per day. Ideally before school but we don’t always have smooth mornings here so any time of day is fine. And when they are fighting off colds, I offer this syrup twice a day.
What you will need:
For this recipe, you will need equal parts of the following ingredients: lemon slices, red onion slices, and white granulated sugar. The measurements are up to you depending on how much syrup you want to make. But to simplify, refer to the recipe card below for two and a half cups of syrup. I often double up on the recipe, freeze it into cubes, and defrost it as needed.
Both the lemon and the red onion work together to be excellent sources of nutrients. The high levels of vitamin C, zinc, and phytochemicals in the onion help fight off colds and cases of flu. And of course, the sugar is there to make it kid-approved but also to help bring out the juice from the onion and lemon.
How to make it:
Once you have gathered your ingredients and they are sliced horizontally, layer the three ingredients like you would construct a lasagna. Lemon slices followed by the sliced red onions and top it off with the granulated sugar continue layering until all your sliced lemon and onion are in the bowl and place the remaining sugar a top as the final layer. After everything is layered into the bowl, cover, it and leave it on your countertop for 24 hours. The next day, use a spoon or spatula and sieves out all the juice from the bowl into a container. Your homemade syrup is complete. To store the natural remedy, place this juice in the fridge for up to 3 weeks or freeze it into cubes like I do and defrost as needed for up to three months.
After preparing your natural syrup, it’s time to enjoy it. Give your kids a tablespoon of syrup daily before heading to school. They’ll love the sweetness and won’t even notice the taste. This will help strengthen their bodies and prevent colds/viruses, as well as speed up recovery when they do get sick.
My boys take a tablespoon (5ml) of this juice daily, and I believe it’s kept our house healthier than usual. When my husband and I feel unwell or start to experience throat irritation, we turn to my freezer stash of this concoction to prevent it from getting worse.
